Maintain Clean Gutters This Fall

Fall is arguably the most beautiful season of the year. As the weather cools and the leaves change, our backyards transform from a sea of green to a magnificent display of autumn shades, from brilliant gold and orange to stunning scarlet and purple. However, the most beautiful part of this season is also the most stress-inducing. When the leaves fall from the trees by the thousands, they mix with twigs, seed pods, and other tree debris to thoroughly clog your roof gutters.

Consequences of Clogged Gutters

It’s a chore no one enjoys but cleaning your home’s gutters is necessary to ensure they function properly without backing up or overflowing, which may result in a variety of serious, costly damages. If you ignore regular gutter maintenance, the following issues can arise:

  • Broken, detached gutters
  • Water damage to your roof, causing it to rot or leak
  • Staining of your siding from water overflow
  • Water damage to your basement, encouraging mold growth
  • Cracks to your home’s foundation due to water freezing and expanding
  • Landscape erosion and flooding
  • Pest infestations, including rodents and termites

Benefits of Clean Gutters

Proper gutter maintenance keeps your home in good condition and allows you to quickly identify and correct any issues or damage before it gets worse or causes further issues. The following benefits are gained from regular gutter cleaning:

  • Avoid water damage to the exterior and interior of your home
  • Maintain the integrity of your roof
  • Protect the foundation of your home
  • Prevent pest infestations
  • Save yourself money and hassle

How to Clean Your Gutters

You should clean your gutters at least twice a year, with one of these cleanings in the fall. The best time to do this is after a light rain, as slightly damp debris will come unclogged more easily. Drain outlets retain the heaviest accumulation of leaves and other debris, so begin there. This is grimy work, so wear eye protection and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.

Make sure your ladder is placed securely and evenly on the ground. With a narrow trowel, scoop up the debris and dispose of it in a garbage bag tied to your belt or the ladder. You can use your hands, but wear gloves and be careful to avoid sharp edges or exposed screws. When the first section of the gutter is clean, reposition the ladder and move onto the next section.

After you’ve completed the debris removal, use a hose to loosen anything you may have missed. This allows you to identify any obstructions, which can be removed with a plumber’s snake working from the bottom up. It also gives you the opportunity to inspect your downspout and determine if your gutters need an adjustment.

Gutter Maintenance

Ensure your home is safe from water damage by regularly cleaning your gutters. This is especially important during autumn, as falling leaves will accumulate and quickly clog your gutters, leading to a complicated and expensive repair. Take care of your gutters before winter arrives, and snow adds to the problem.
